As I have finished the first 2 weeks of teaching summer school, I thought it was only appropriate that I reflect on the things I have learned…courtesy of my 1st grade students.
1. Contrary to popular belief, the sun does NOT come out every day in Phoenix.
Henry: “The sun came out today!”
Teacher: “Ummm…Henry, doesn’t the sun come out every day?”
Henry: “It didn’t come out yesterday!”
***Side note: It was 115 degrees the day before…
2. 1st graders have fantastic ambitions in life.
Teacher: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
Willie: “The Moon!”
3. A 1st grade education is really all you need.
Teacher: “Do you want to go to college?”
Alex: “Yes! Is college 1st grade?”
4. 1st graders smell really nice.
Teacher: “Tell me about the kids in the class. What do you think of them?”
Willie: “They are like flowers.”
Teacher: “Why are they like flowers?”
Willie: “Because they smell real nice.”
5. Disneyland is in the clouds.
Henry: “…and then I went to Disney.”
Teacher: “You went to Disneyland?”
Henry: “Uh, no! I Disney is down and really far away, and Disneyland is in the clouds!”
6. It is possible to be perfect in some things.
Teacher: “Is there anything else you want to tell me about class?”
Rogelio: “I am perfect at math.”
7. I am the lamest person ever for not knowing Spanish.
Henry: “I love you and I want you to come to my house. But, do you know Spanish?”
Teacher: “No, I don’t know Spanish.”
Henry: “Then you can’t come to my house. But I’ll come to yours.”
Overall, 1st grade is turning out to be quite the educational experience for me!
I had a little girl last year that sincerely wanted to be a bird when she grew up. Love kids and the crazy things they say. :)
ReplyDeleteI laughed out loud at the moon comment. I love this. This should be a regular feature on your blog! :)
